Who we are, Where we are, and What we do
For over thirty years, the Mount Vernon Square Neighborhood Association (MVSNA) has represented the community just north of downtown DC. The area was designated as a historic district in 2001. In 2007, MVSNA expanded to incorporate the quickly growing area known as "the Triangle." The combination of the historic district and Triangle provide residents with an exciting range of restaurants, retail, and housing. Just north of downtown DC and the National Mall, and within blocks of two metro stops, Mount Vernon Square is among the most convenient neighborhoods to live in the city.
MVSNA is a nonprofit organization organized under the laws of the District of Columbia and composed of an all volunteer Board of Directors, including six officers and five at-large members. Members of the Association include residents, business owners, and religious institutions within its boundaries. It is supported primarily by membership dues and other donations.
MVSNA seeks to preserve the historic and architectural character and aesthetic values of the community, to celebrate the diversity of our neighborhood, to promote the general interests of residents and property owners, to represent neighborhood interests before regulatory and administrative boards and the DC Council, and to engage in other activities to protect the interests or the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. MVSNA is a recognized leader in fighting for residents on issues such as public safety and nuisance properties. The Association plans various community events such as picnics, neighborhood cleanups, plantings, and outdoor movies. It is active in community development, working with the District government and private property owners regarding proposed housing, businesses, historic preservation, permits and licensing. MVSNA regularly publishes a neighborhood newsletter and meets on a monthly basis.
The Association occasionally testifies before the D.C. Council and government agencies to safeguard community interests and works closely with public officials. A border area, the neighborhood falls within Wards 2 and 6, and is adjacent to Ward 5. As such, it is represented by Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 2C, 5C, and 6C. In addition, the community is divided among the First and Third Police Districts (Police Service Areas 101 and 308), and incorporates a small piece of the MPD's Fifth District.
We welcome you to our community and invite you to become an active member of our Association.
Meeting
MVSNA's meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., except August when we break.
